Chiller Removal and Replacement

Project Overview:

PSC Crane & Rigging successfully executed a complex chiller removal and replacement project within an active corporate facility, requiring precise planning, coordination, and specialized rigging techniques.
The project involved extracting two existing chillers from a sub-basement located three levels below grade and installing two new units weighing approximately 24,000 pounds each in the same confined space. Access to the work area presented significant logistical challenges, including navigating through an active parking garage with strict load limitations and limited overhead clearance.
To overcome these constraints, PSC implemented a strategic approach that included partial disassembly of both the outgoing and incoming chillers. Components were carefully rigged, skated, and transported through restricted pathways before being reassembled in place. The team utilized shore towers, hand rigging methods, forklifts, and specialized skates to safely maneuver equipment while maintaining the integrity of the facility.
As part of the same project scope, PSC also deployed a compact spider crane to remove multiple mechanical units from a mezzanine level. The spider crane’s compact footprint and precision lifting capabilities allowed the team to safely operate in tight, elevated spaces where traditional equipment could not be used, further demonstrating PSC’s versatility in complex indoor environments.
Additional challenges included working within a compressed schedule and coordinating operations around an actively used parking garage during first-shift hours. Despite these obstacles, PSC completed the project efficiently and safely, showcasing adaptability and expertise in high-complexity industrial environments.

Equipment Utilized:

  • Shore Towers
  • Skates
  • Hand Rigging
  • Fork Lifts
  • Spider Crane
